Memorial Day events honor soldiers' sacrifice

Patriotism is alive and well in Beaufort County as hundreds of children, veterans groups and families prepare for the Memorial Day celebration.
Eight school classes and groups, totaling more than 540 children, as well as three families are following a tradition of placing American flags on the 7,000 headstones at Beaufort National Cemetery through Friday.
Lady's Island Intermediate and Middle School students, who have been studying the 26th Regiment of African-American soldiers which fought in the Civil War, will lay a wreath in their honor, said Ken Dickman, a teacher at the school.
HILTON HEAD ISLAND
Hilton Head Area Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America will help put American flags on the graves of each veteran, the entryway and roadway at Six Oaks Cemetery in Sea Pines at 9 a.m. today. Details: 843-671-1343, ext. 131
The annual Memorial Day observance with special recognition of World War II veterans: 10:30 a.m., Veterans Memorial Park on Shelter Cove Lane. Sponsored by the Hilton Head Island Council of the U.S. Navy League. U.S. Marine Corps Maj. Gen. Jon Davis will speak. Hilton Head Island High School Navy JROTC will provide the color guard. SUN CITY HILTON HEAD
Sun City Veterans Association's Memorial Day service: 10 a.m. Monday, town square at Sun City Hilton Head. Guest speaker will be retired Army Col. Glenn Frazier, who survived the Bataan Death March during World War II. Women's Relief Corps and Sons and Daughters of War Veterans Memorial Day Celebration: 3 p.m. Sunday, Grace Chapel AME Church, 502 Charles St., Beaufort. Speaker is U.S. Navy Capt. Joan Queen, MSC, commanding officer of Beaufort Naval Hospital. Following the service the group will gather in Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park, where flowers will be cast into the water in memory of service members who died at sea.
Robert Smalls Association Pre-Memorial Day Dance: 9 p.m. Sunday to 1 a.m. Monday, Quality Inn, U.S. 21, Beaufort. Music will be provided by DJ Brainstorm with light hors d'oeuvres. Cost is $15. The Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Beaufort commemoration of the memory of men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military: 10 a.m. Sunday, 178 Sams Point Road, Lady's Island.
