Patriotism is alive and well in Beaufort County as hundreds of children, veterans groups and families prepare for the Memorial Day celebration.
Eight school classes and groups, totaling more than 540 children, as well as three families are following a tradition of placing American flags on the 7,000 headstones at Beaufort National Cemetery through Friday.
Lady's Island Intermediate and Middle School students, who have been studying the 26th Regiment of African-American soldiers which fought in the Civil War, will lay a wreath in their honor, said Ken Dickman, a teacher at the school.

Hilton Head Area Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America will help put American flags on the graves of each veteran, the entryway and roadway at Six Oaks Cemetery in Sea Pines at 9 a.m. today. Details: 843-671-1343, ext. 131
